Design your website in accordance to DDA

In a technically driven market where Internet is not only driving sales but also enhancing the brand image, the important question is whether your website is legal or not. You are probably aware of the laws associated with the advertising, copyright, content, plagiarism aspects of a website but we are talking about a law introduced in the UK in 1995, and it is applicable for anyone who deals with the public. This law is known as The Disability Discrimination Act 1995, or simply DDA.

According to this law, it is illegal to provide a service, which cannot be accessed by everyone. It is immaterial whether this service is being provided with or without any payment. The core idea revolves around services and information provided through the Internet. There are many people who increase the font size of their website, but you need to understand that disability doesn’t deal with only visual impairment but includes all types of disabilities. Take for example, people suffering from dyslexia. Now if your website has an unclear navigation and if you use jargons extensively then in all probability, 10% of your visitors will not be able to access it. So ask yourself if you are actually adhering to the law?

There are three primary ways of designing your website and enabling a more refined content structure. W3C is one of the most regarded standards and can be followed to design your website. The second valuable addition is a content management system that will allow you to add content that is accessible to people disability. Third, would be set up maintenance teams to check the accessibility of the website content. All this put together will not only provide vital information to people with disability but also show that you care!
